about me
music is in my blood. my parents met in school choir, and they're still singing together today, and my musical heritage goes back even farther. growing up singing all the old hymns, I think the melodies and meter became lodged inside me.
but besides grade-school tinkering, I didn't pick up an instrument until I started college. completely self-taught, I moved from bass to guitar to mandolin before too long, and I finally settled on the octave mandolin as my musical voice of choice. perhaps it's fitting that a somewhat-strange guy would wield a somewhat-strange instrument.
I'm old-fashioned in more than one way, and especially as it pertains to my musical influences. I count Gillian Welch and Norman Blake as my musical heroes, as well as "new acoustic" luminaries such as Edgar Meyer, Bela Fleck, Mike Marshall and Chris Thile.
having tinkered for years, I was finally able to put my meager talents to use at my local church, heading up our acoustic collective, which regularly assists with the worship services.
then not long ago, I resurrected my English major (no small feat considering I'm a computer guy by day) and started writing my own folk songs, as well as instrumental tunes on my beloved octave mandolin. I had a sudden interest in the fascinating and sometimes sordid history of my hometown of 15 years, so I began to put some in song.
having self-produced two small home-made albums, I am always excited to share these (and other) stories in song. so have a listen, and I hope you enjoy.
